Canning Have Tough First-up Fixture
Volume 1, Issue 1, Date
Fixture/Result: State League First Division:
Swan United 4: Canning City 0
Venue: Swan Italian Club, Middle Swan
Canning City F.C. commenced its tenth season in the State league last Saturday. After finishing mid
table last season Canning’s management committee have decided to move away from largely recruiting
from outside the club for the 2011 season. Instead Canning has returned to bringing through its
young home grown players supported by a few older experienced players. New coach Mark Wood
has a big task on hand in getting the team to jell and raising the standard of the young players. With
this background Canning were always going to find the contest against Swan United, who recently
won the First Division pre-season Night Series competition, a difficult assignment last Saturday. The
match started with Canning on the back foot and it wasn’t long before Canning keeper James Partridge
was called into action by pulling off a fine save from Aaron Colli’s powerful shot from outside
the penalty area by tipping the ball over the crossbar. Swan continued to pile on the pressure but
Canning’s defense marshaled by Dave Evans, held firm through a few nervous moments with the
team occasionally breaking out of defense on the counter attack. In the twentieth minute Canning
came close to taking a surprise lead from a melee in the Swan goal mouth. However, the ball was
eventually cleared. Swan’s pressure eventually paid off two minutes before half time when the ball
was deflected off a Canning defender and fell to the feet of Tom Shepheard who has a simple job to
smack the ball from six metres out into the top right hand corner of the goal giving James Partridge
little chance to make a save. The second half started in much the same vane, but it was difficult to
see how Canning could continue to absorb the pressure without relinquishing another goal. Eventually
Swan did break through when Craig Tooley outpaced Canning’s defense on the right and
crossed the ball to John Monterosso at the far post for a simple tap-in. From this point it was difficult to see any way back for Canning with little in the way of passing moves through the mid-field to
Canning’s forwards Diego Garcia and Greg Newcomb who were somewhat isolated. Swan got their
third goal when Tom Shepheard headed a goal from a corner unchallenged at the far post. Two minutes
before full time Swan got its fourth goal when Craig Tooley dribbled the ball across the edge of
the penalty area, made space and hit a low shot to the right of a diving James Partridge. On the stroke
of full time Canning came close to getting a consolation goal when Dane Navaro beat Swan’s offside
trap and raced in on the home side’s goal only
to be denied by the legs of keeper Daniel
Agudelo. Earlier Canning City’s Reserves
came back from a one goal deficit to win 2:1
and the Eighteens drew 1:1 respectively with
their Swan opponents.
